Manoel Bomfim: The hygienist educational thought and the (de)colonial perspective

The article presents a critical study of Manoel Bomfim's educational thought conditioned by the hygienist thinking in force at the time, to identify the extent to which the author reproduced characteristics that we now recognize as coloniality or decoloniality. From a contextualization of his thinking through a bibliographic study, it is concluded that the production of a pedagogical thought, from his experience as a teacher, expanded the vision of hygienist education of the time to an understanding of preventive health. As one of the precursors of the struggle for the universalization of the right to education, he rejected determinisms that related racial inferiorities and environmental conditions to the impossibility of autonomous development in our country, denouncing that the causes of the harms of origin are due to the exploitation of colonies by the metropolis.
