It is essential to reflect on the teaching of literature at school and the public education policies that involve it. Thus, the research aims to reflect on public policies aimed at teaching literature in the school context, and as specific: discuss the meanings that the word literature has gained over time; highlight the most current theoretical discourses on the literature; revisit some theoretical currents in order to understand the broader view of the concept of literary text; and to point out some considerations about the teaching of literature from some official documents. The discussions held here start from a bibliographic study and analysis of official documents on the teaching of literature. It was found that much still needs to be thought about teaching literature at school, since the documents do not effectively direct its practice in the classroom.
