The innovation has been responsible for significant leaps in development over time, promoting economic prosperity and social well-being. However, these advances have not been sufficient to contain the growing increase in inequality in the world and have been questioning the impact of modern innovations compared to past innovations. Given these considerations, this essay aims to discuss the influence of the trajectory of the innovation field on the development of societies and the directions that can be taken for an innovation that promotes development. The technical and economic paradigms represented by the five great waves of innovation are discussed, the expected impact of innovations in the face of current demands, and the actions that can be developed for innovations that bring more equitable socioeconomic development. It is hoped that the insights generated in this essay can bring a critical look at the role of innovation in reducing inequality and contribute to the development of new research on the subject.
