Abstract

Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, qualitativo, com objetivo de conhecer os significados da doença mental para indivíduos com enfermidades de caráter psicótico, internados em um hospital geral. Constituíram a amostra cinco pessoas. Foi utilizada entrevista semi-estruturada para obtenção das informações. Os dados foram submetidos à análise do conteúdo, na modalidade de análise temática. Os pesquisados se reportaram a doença mental, como: resultado de castigos divinos e de feitiçaria; realidade carregada de sofrimento e dificuldades; fruto de perdas sofridas e de vivências da infância; algo difícil de explicar; estigma, incompreensão, descrédito e desqualificação; presença de sintomas; limitadora para atividades cotidianas e incapacitante para o trabalho. Conclui-se a necessidade de intervenções que dirijam um olhar para as relações do doente mental com família, trabalho e comunidade.
