O reconhecimento das percepções de sujeitos e comunidadessobre assuntos referentes à vida fundamenta o planejamento, programação e execução de práticas realmente eficientes e eficazes. A Teoria das Representações Sociais apresenta-se como um método capaz de identificar o conhecimento prático e a compreensão do contexto social. Esta teoria pode ser definida como um sistema de interpretação da realidade, organizada a partir das relações dos indivíduos com o mundo e orientada segundo as condutas e comportamentos no meio social. As Representações Sociais colaboram com a identificação das percepções que grupos sociais apresentam sobre determinado assunto, contribuindo dessa forma para a adequação das práticas sociais, no sentido de incrementar o conhecimento comunitário.
