This study aims to analyze the characteristics raised by the studies against the use of the family digester as a strategy for rural sanitation in small family properties. For this purpose, an exploratory, bibliographical research was carried out with a systematic review and data analysis in a qualitative and quantitative way. The Ucinet® software was used to support the analyses. Data collection was through selected articles in the Web of Science, SCOPUS and SciElo databases. The variables in the studies highlight the relationship of rural sanitation with the impact on health, biogas for cooking and with the quality of life, demonstrating the importance of implanting biodigesters, and public policies contribute to dissemination in the installation. The results show that despite the partial result of sustainable development facing economic issues, the installation can be compensated by government actions that financially support the dissemination of biodigesters, given the valuable social and environmental benefits. The studies found do not support the use of the biodigester for rural sanitation, and studies are needed to demonstrate the efficiency of the biodigester for sewage treatment and the use of by-products, biogas and biofertilizer, to improve quality of life.
