The purpose of this article is to analyze how former beneficiaries of the National Student Assistance Program (Pnaes) in Tocantins broke with intergenerational poverty. The research was qualitative. It was a multiple case study, with five cases of professionals who received financial assistance from Pnaes during their undergraduate studies. The cases were holistic, intentional with literal replication. The instruments of data collection were the semi-structured interview, collection of documents and files, such as curriculum Lattes and photo files. The cross-analysis of the cases showed that the intergenerational poverty in the interviewees' lives was broken through family strategies developed throughout life and the articulation of intra and extra-family factors, alteration of the habitus, acquisition of new capital, access policies, permanence and diploma in higher education and opportunities in the labor market. During graduation they developed eight common strategies that maximized employability, which are: participation in projects (extension, research and others), daily average of four hours of extra study, extended daily stay at the educational institution, taking advantage of work opportunities, participation in events, Pnaes as a factor of permanence, political participation in the university and support network with cultural capital. It is concluded that these strategies can be incorporated into the student assistance programs of educational institutions and in the daily lives of students.
