O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a forma de utilização da insulina e os fatores relacionados a este tratamento, e identificar reações adversas decorrentes do uso de insulina e potencial contribuição do farmacêutico. A pesquisa de caráter qualitativo e quantitativo foi realizada a partir de instrumento de coleta de dados, e entrevista à usuários portadores de DM tipo I e II que utilizam insulina e a retiram na farmácia municipal de Panambi/RS. Os resultados deste estudo demonstram algumas falhas no tratamento com insulina, no domínio correto da técnica de aplicação, bem como no rodízio dos locais de aplicação, dentre as quais destaca-se a reutilização do conjunto seringa/agulha, além do preconizado na literatura pesquisada, bem como, a realização de assepsia da agulha utilizando algodão com álcool. Verificou-se ainda desconhecimento da maioria dos entrevistados quanto ao possível armazenamento da insulina em uso à temperatura ambiente, e o desconhecimento de hipoglicemia como uma reação adversa por alguns entrevistados. Dessa maneira, visto que alguns dos procedimentos realizados pelos usuários não estão de acordo com o preconizado, cabe aos profissionais da saúde, estar em constantes atualizações, a fim de orientar corretamente os usuários, já que o uso correto da insulina é de fundamental importância para que se tenha um bom controle da doença. Para isso, é necessário um envolvimento do paciente e de profissionais da área da saúde, destacando o médico endocrinologista e o farmacêutico.
