Profile of hospitalized patietns with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), worldwide, is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality. Currently, the fourth cause of death in the world, tending to be the third cause of death by 2020. Therefore, it is important to identify the profile of these patients in order to implement strategies for intervention and mitigation of the condition. Objective: To analyze the profile of patients hospitalized with COPD in 2018 in a large IV hospital in the interior of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Methods: A cross-sectional study of patients admitted between January and December 2018. The data was collected in August 2019, with a specific computerized report provided by the hospital, through the International Code of Disease- COPD (ICD 10 - J44), respecting the confidentiality of information. The following were collected for analysis: age, sex, length of hospital and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stay, hospital mortality, use of Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) and Invasive Mechanical Ventilation (IMV), and physiotherapy sessions. Presentation of data as mean ± standard deviation. Results: Composed sample of 33 patients, mean age 70.48±11.03 years, predominantly male 21 (64%) individuals. The mean time of ICU and hospital stay was 0.91±2.55 and 9.76±15.33 days, respectively. Five patients (15.2%) were for IMV and 23 patients (69.7%) used NIV. The mean physiotherapeutic sessions were 29.45±26.40. The general mortality was 8 patients (24.24%) and 6 (28.6%) were male. Conclusion: The patients presented advanced age, predominating male gender. Mortality is similar to that described in the literature, and NIV prevailed in the hospital approach.
