Objective: to compare the means of quality of life, medication adherence and indications of depression in chronic renal patients undergoing hemodialysis, in two nephrological units. Method: cross-sectional study with 183 patients who were diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, on hemodialysis. Individual interview conducted using the instruments: sociodemographic questionnaire, Kidney Disease and Quality of Life Short-Form, Beck Depression Inventory and 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale. Data analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: 63,4% of the patients were male and 90,7% retired. The dimension of quality of life that obtained the highest average in both units was “Support from the Dialysis Team”, while “Work Situation” and “Limitations caused by physical problems”, the lowest averages. “Effects of Kidney Disease” and medication adherence showed higher averages in Unit I. Also, 47% of patients in Unit I and 33% of the other unit had symptoms indicative of depression. Conclusions: chronic kidney disease affects negatively the quality of life of patients, the prevalence of depression among them is high and medication adherence can reduce the perception of the effects of the disease. Interventions are necessary in order to promote medication adherence and well-being.
