Objective: To identify in the literature the influence of self-efficacy in breastfeeding on breastfeeding outcomes and to know the protective factors to self-efficacy in breastfeeding. Method: Integrative review study, searching the Virtual Health Library, using the keywords breastfeeding, self-efficacy and women's health. Results: The review comprises 17 articles, published between 2014 and 2018, in Portuguese and Spanish. Self-efficacy in breastfeeding is essential in the intention, protection and maintenance of breastfeeding, especially exclusive breastfeeding. Among the protective factors for self-efficacy, the previous experience of women stood out, learning through observation, verbal persuasion, constructs of the Social Cognitive Theory, and educational strategies that anchor the planning and execution of actions to promote breastfeeding. Conclusions: Health education, with recognition of self-efficacy in breastfeeding and use of the “Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy-Scale”, contributes to the promotion, protection, support and maintenance of breastfeeding.
