This study aimed to evaluate matrix support in mental health in primary health care, based on the strengths and weaknesses highlighted by the supporters of a small municipality. Qualitative study, based on the theoretical-methodological framework of the fourth generation assessment, carried out between December 2018 and February 2019, with seven matrix support professionals from a small municipality in Rio Grande do Sul. The supporters highlighted as potentialities of the matrix support work: the sharing of cases; collective and shared work; the availability and accessibility of professionals; building bonds; and the sharing of responsibilities. And weaknesses include transportation, the workload of matrix support, intersectoral relations and resistance to matrix support. When analyzing the potential, it is possible to find issues that leverage the work of matrix support and are fundamental to understanding the reality. Similarly, when observing the weaknesses of matrix support or some unfavorable conditions, these situations also contribute to understanding some aspects of health work. It is necessary to consider these aspects for monitoring and planning matrix support in mental health.
