Social representations and internal conversations: on the strategies of image reframing undertaken by criminal lawyers in the city of Maceió / AL

Brazil’s Federal Constitution exalts the figure of the lawyer as an essencial professional to justice. However, the social representations about criminal lawyers differ from this image, equating them with the clients they defend. The aim of this article is to propose a typology of criminal lawyers in the city of Maceió, taking into account the way these professionals build their careers. To achieve that, we use Archer's perspective and her concept of Self. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seventeen criminal lawyers of the city. The research pointed to the existence of at least three types of Self: which we call technical-spiritualized, hygienist and humanist.
