Proposal for the implementation of Environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategies at the Federal University of Ceará's Pici campus

Abstract

Environmental issues have become increasingly relevant due to the growing awareness within society regarding environmental preservation, particularly in the context of climate change. In this regard, the role of public universities as models of socio-environmental responsibility stands out. From this perspective, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), also referred to as ASG (Ambiental, Social e Governança), has emerged as a reference framework that integrates environmental, social, and governance factors. It is defined as a strategy and practice for incorporating these factors into investment decisions and active ownership. Thus, ESG has been consolidated as a standard strategy used by investors to evaluate corporate behavior and to project future financial performance. This study aimed to develop a proposal for implementing ESG strategies at the Pici Campus of the Federal University of Ceará. The research used institutional documents, such as the Institutional Development Plan and the Sustainable Logistics Plan of UFC, to identify sustainable actions already in place at the university. Through a literature review and questionnaires administered to staff members, the institutional perception of ESG was assessed, and an action plan inspired by the 5W2H methodology was proposed. It was found that UFC already adopts several initiatives aligned with ESG principles, included in both the Institutional Development Plan and the Sustainable Logistics Plan, and that most of the sectors participating in the research are familiar with the ESG concept and consider it important for institutional development. Therefore, it was concluded that the implementation of ESG at the Pici Campus is technically feasible and important for formalizing and giving visibility to existing sustainability actions.
